This year, Jeep introduced the CRD (Common Rail Diesel) engine in their line of vehicles. It is an option of course, and much to my dismay, it is only available in 45 out of the 50 states due to emissions issues. For those that read this site often, or even not so often, you know I've already talked about this, and I'm not going to go into that again. Recently however, I've been reading up on the new Bluetec diesel. From what I've read, the Bluetec version will be emissions legal in all 50 states. Which is great. The problem is that in order to achieve this, a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) is required. For thos that don't know, a SCR effectively reduces Nitrous Oxides to Nitrogen and Water by adding amonia as a reducing agent. What does this mean to anyone in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine or California? It means you need to have a source of Amonia on your vehicle. Which means another tank. From what I understand, it woulnd't have to be filled often, only on regularly scheduled service intervals, but it's still one more thing to worry about. Plus, I sincerely doubt that most people will bother to keep the tank filled. All in all, I like the idea of a 50 state legal diesel. In truth, I would love to have one. But, why can't they come up with one that doesn't require work? I'm going to have to track this one to see how much of a hassle it really is to keep that amonia tank filled.
