They have both ranked very high in terms of safety. I personally am glad to hear this as my next vehicle is most likely going to be a Grand Cherokee. I must admit, it won't be taken off-road since it will be the family vehicle (There's no way I'm buying a mini-van), but at least it's a Jeep right? I'll still have my CJ-7 for playing with. And I don't have to worry about scratching that. Anyway, here is what chrysler had to say about the Liberty and Grand Cherokee. 2008 Jeep Liberty The 2008 Jeep Liberty is equipped with 35 safety and security features including the company’s side-occupant protection system. Well, Autocar has done their own testing on three stock offroad vehicles. A Jeep Wrangler Sahara, a Land Rover Defender, and a Hummer H3. How did they test them? Simple, they took a muddy hill and tried to make it up them. It is an option of course, and much to my dismay, it is only available in 45 out of the 50 states due to emissions issues. For those that read this site often, or even not so often, you know I've already talked about this, and I'm not going to go into that again. Recently however, I've been reading up on the new Bluetec diesel.From what I've read, the Bluetec version will be emissions legal in all 50 states. Which is great. The problem is that in order to achieve this, a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) is required. For thos that don't know, a SCR effectively reduces Nitrous Oxides to Nitrogen and Water by adding amonia as a reducing agent. What does this mean to anyone in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine or California? It means you need to have a source of Amonia on your vehicle. Which means another tank. From what I understand, it woulnd't have to be filled often, only on regularly scheduled service intervals, but it's still one more thing to worry about. Plus, I sincerely doubt that most people will bother to keep the tank filled. All in all, I like the idea of a 50 state legal diesel. In truth, I would love to have one. But, why can't they come up with one that doesn't require work? I'm going to have to track this one to see how much of a hassle it really is to keep that amonia tank filled.
