Land Rover Donates 4 Millionth Vehicle
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 30 May 2007

IRVINE, Calif. — Land Rover today passed a historic milestone when the four millionth vehicle rolled off the production line, 59 years after production began at the company’s factory in Solihull.

The vehicle, a Land Rover LR3, was donated to the Born Free Foundation, a charity dedicated to wildlife conservation and animal welfare. It was collected by the actress Joanna Lumley, Born Free’s Founder patron, and will become a ‘Rapid Response Rescue’ vehicle for deployment across the UK and Europe.

Will Travers, Born Free chief executive, said, “This important vehicle will enable us to carry out important frontline conservation and animal welfare missions at will. Without Land Rover’s support we simply would not be able to reach some of the off-road remote destinations or tackle some of the rescues that are a vital part of our work.”

Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited Climbs Highest Volcano on Earth and Sets New Altitude World Record
  • Two Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited vehicles climbed 6,646 meters (21,804 feet) above sea level to the rim of Ojos del Salado – the highest altitude ever reached by a four-wheeled vehicle
  • Accomplishment certified by Guinness World Records™

Auburn Hills, Mich. -  Seventy years after the first man climbed the world’s highest volcano, Ojos del Salado in Chile, two Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited vehicles set a new world record by climbing 6,646 meters (21,804 feet) to the volcano’s rim. The achievement, certified by Guinness World Records™, is not one that is likely to be easily beaten.

Others tried, but only the “go anywhere, do anything” Jeep vehicles could make it to the top of the volcano. It is the second highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere (6,892 meters / 22,597 feet), and now dubbed the “highest parking lot in the world”. Jeep parking only, of course. Over five exhausting days in March, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited vehicles carried a team from Extrem Events (Germany), led by Mattias Jeschke, from the base of the inhospitable volcano in the Chilean Andes to the highest point that a four-wheeled vehicle has traveled.

Revival of the Steam Engine? Not Exactly.
Written by Administrator

ImageHow do you greatly improve the efficiency of a standard internal combustion engine?  Well, according to Bruce Crower, add some steam.  Well, water really.  Apparently, Bruce has been trying to figure out how to improve the efficiency of the standard internal combustion engine for some time.  It's fairly well known that a standard ICE engine is only about 24 percent efficient.  Most of the losses are simply gone through the radiator as heat.  But Bruce has figured out a way to get an extra 40% efficiency.  How?  He adds another 2 strokes.  After the normal exhaust stroke, there is another compression stroke in which he adds a small amount of water.  The heat from the combustion stroke instantly flashes the water to steam, which provides one more power stroke with no additional fuel.  The plus side, the steam takes a lot of the heat away, and keeps the engine cool.  i.e.  no more radiator required.  The additional fuel efficiency is a big plus too.  The problems, you need water to take advantage of it.  In cold climates, this could pose a problem due to freezing in the winter.  Plus, the infrastructure has to be developed for providing clean water at fuel stations.  Bruce imagines it will take equal emounts of fuel and water.  I think it's a great idea, and I'm sure the freezing issue can be overcome by some additive to the water.  I can't wait to see how far this idea goes.  You can read more about it on Autoweek's webpage.

Wrangler Ultimate Concept
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 24 May 2007

ImageWhat do you get if you take a stock Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and add a 3 inch lift kit, 35 inch tires on 18 inch aluminum wheels, and every shiny new accessory?  The Wrangler Ultimate of course.  This is another one of Jeep's concept vehicles for the 2007 SEMA show.  Of course the changes are a bit more than just accessories.  There is a custom paint job and some custom interior work as well.  But, all in all, it doesn't really look too much different than just a tricked out Wrangler Unlimited.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's a bad thing.  In fact, I really like the look of the Ultimate.  If Jeep wants to send one my way to play with, I'll gladly accept.  You can read more about it on Autoblog's Website.  They have a lot of good high-res pics of the exterior and interior.

Jeep JT
Written by Administrator

Image  Chrysler Skunkworks has been playing around with ideas and has come up with the Jeep JT.  The Jeep JT will be making it's formal debut at the SEMA show in late october this year.  Aparently, Chrysler skunkworks is just a group of guys who like to play with cars in their free time.  Just like the everyone reading this article I'm sure.  The real difference being that they have the backing of Chrysler.  Must be nice.

Anyway, the Jeep JT is basically a one off truck concept.  It comes complete with a 3 inch lift and a 5 foot bed.  The powertrain is identical to the wrangler (3.8 liter V-6, 4 speed automatic).  And the JT has the same wheelbase as the wrangler unlimited.   It also borrows the suspension from the unlimited.

Now, I've never been a fan of Jeep trucks.  I know quadratec sells a conversion kit to make your Jeep into one.  I just never thought it looked quite right.  But the JT may show some promise.  Oh, and a side note, the top is removable.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see if this ever makes it to market.  In the mean time, you can read more about it on motortrends blog.
