Jeep Liberty and Cherokee Earn 5 Stars

For those of you that have been considering a new Jeep Liberty or Grand Cherokee for 2008, here is some good news.  They have both ranked very high in terms of safety.  I personally am glad to hear this as my next vehicle is most likely going to be a Grand Cherokee.  I must admit, it won't be taken off-road since it will be the family vehicle (There's no way I'm buying a mini-van), but at least it's a Jeep right?  I'll still have my CJ-7 for playing with.  And I don't have to worry about scratching that.  Anyway, here is what chrysler had to say about the Liberty and Grand Cherokee.

2008 Jeep Liberty
The 2008 Jeep Liberty is equipped with 35 safety and security features including the company’s side-occupant protection system. The system includes supplemental side-curtain air bags with extended up time, tethers and multiple sensors in case of a rollover.  Adding to the mid-size SUV’s long list of standard safety and security features are Electronic Stability Program, Electronic Roll Mitigation, anti-lock brake system, tire pressure monitoring (TPM), rain-sensing wipers and three new technologies — Trailer Sway Control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers technologies such as electronic limited slip differentials and Electronic Stability Program that help to contribute to the vehicle’s on-road and off-road dynamics. Advanced multistage front and supplemental side curtain air bags, tire pressure monitoring system, ParkView™ Rear Back-up Camera (with or without navigation), ParkSense® Rear Park Assist System, SmartBeam® headlamps, high-intensity discharge headlamps and rain-sensing wipers offer the latest innovation in occupant protection, safety and security on the road.  The Jeep Grand Cherokee also features three new safety and security technologies for 2008 — Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control.

Jeep vs. Land Rover vs. Hummer
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 27 December 2007

Have you ever wondered how a stock Jeep holds up against other stock vehicles in terms of offroad performance?  Well, Autocar has done their own testing on three stock offroad vehicles.  A Jeep Wrangler Sahara, a Land Rover Defender, and a Hummer H3.

How did they test them?  Simple, they took a muddy hill and tried to make it up them.  Check out the video here, http://www.autocar.co.uk/VideosWallpapers/Videos.aspx?AR=229679&CT=V and make your own conclusions.  My opinion?  All three vehicles would have made it up the hill if they had the same tires on them, and went into the hill at the same speed.  Still interesting though.

Bluetec Jeep Grand Cherokee. Good or Bad?
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 03 October 2007

This year, Jeep introduced the CRD (Common Rail Diesel) engine in their line of vehicles.  It is an option of course, and much to my dismay, it is only available in 45 out of the 50 states due to emissions issues.  For those that read this site often, or even not so often, you know I've already talked about this, and I'm not going to go into that again.  Recently however, I've been reading up on the new Bluetec diesel.

From what I've read, the Bluetec version will be emissions legal in all 50 states.  Which is great.  The problem is that in order to achieve this, a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) is required.  For thos that don't know, a SCR effectively reduces Nitrous Oxides to Nitrogen and Water by adding amonia as a reducing agent.  What does this mean to anyone in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine or California?  It means you need to have a source of Amonia on your vehicle.  Which means another tank.  From what I understand, it woulnd't have to be filled often, only on regularly scheduled service intervals, but it's still one more thing to worry about.  Plus, I sincerely doubt that most people will bother to keep the tank filled.

All in all, I like the idea of a 50 state legal diesel.  In truth, I would love to have one.  But, why can't they come up with one that doesn't require work?  I'm going to have to track this one to see how much of a hassle it really is to keep that amonia tank filled.

If at first you don't succeed....

This is you classic "Look before you leap" kind of deal.  Thankfully everyone is OK in the end.  Just a reminder to scope out an area before wheeling.  And if you don't know what's on the other side, it's probably better not to risk it.
